We have taken thousands of photos over the years as investigators and volunteers at the Adelaide Gaol conducting ghost tours but nearly all the photos have had a normal explanation. As with anything, there are always a few photos that can't be explained away so easily, whether they are paranormal or not is difficult to say but at this stage they are unexplained.

The three photos above were taken by Jeff on a ghost tour conducted in 2005. A lady on this particular tour told him that she heard foot steps behind her and that she was feeling uncomfortable. Jeff then proceeded to take a number of photographs in the area were the footsteps were heard and, to his surprise, he captured these three photos. All three photos were taken at the same location in Yard 3. The first photo has been nicknamed "Skeletor" for obvious reasons.
The photos were taken by a KODAK DX4900 (4.0 Meg-pixel). They were taken approximately 9-10 seconds a part with no other misty photos captured on the night. The weather on the night was mild, around 18 degrees Celsius. Photo by Jeff Fausch.

The photo above was taken by Jeff in December, 2004. He was in the Remand Centre of the Adelaide Gaol, preparing for a ghost tour, when he heard a loud whisper say, "I know you". He grabbed his digital camera and took a series of shots. In the first photo he took, there was a greyish form at ceiling level, behind one of the metal rafters.
The first photo is the original photograph, the second photo is cropped from the original to show that the anomaly was behind the rafter, which means that it was not dust close to the camera lens.

A misty grey form on the staircase.
This photo was taken by a lady at the first paranormal workshop conducted at the Adelaide Gaol in 2007. The lady heard sounds coming from the staircase of the administration building, she then proceeded to take a number of photos in the area where she heard the sounds coming from and, to her surprise, she captured this grey misty form.
The camera used was a digital camera but I don't know the make or the mega-pixels.

Man in the doorway
This photo was taken by a lady on a ghost tour at the Adelaide Gaol conducted by Jeff Fausch and Alison Oborn in 2005. They were in Yard 2 when she felt as if someone was watching her, she proceeded to turn around and took this photo. At first she only noticed the unusual lights around the entrance of the doorway. It was not until she uploaded the photo on to her computer that she noticed someone coming through the doorway. When the photo was shown to Gaol historian, he stated that the grey attire worn by the figure was a prison uniform. At the time the photo was taken there were no other people in the Gaol, except for the tour group. The lady who took the photo did not see anyone when she took the photo, only had the feeling of being watched.

I would like to thank Vikki Edwards for sharing this photo.

Jeff rarely puts up orb photos but this one is a curiosity. This photo was taken during a PFI investigation at a cemetery just outside Kapunda in early 2005. He has taken hundreds of orb photos at this location but they are usually dust, pollen etc. This one is odd because of the bright green colour and the appearance of movement. Being summer, most of the orbs photographed are usually the colour of the geology of the area (reddish, orange, brown etc). He can't say this anomaly is of a paranormal nature but can say it does not fit in with the normal dusty anomalies photographed at this location.

This photo is what makes the paranormal so confusing - 99% of orbs have a natural explanation but this one has thrown a curve ball. During a PFI investigation at a cemetery in 2005, Jeff was in the new section with another investigator when an apparition ran through his torch light. It looked like a male figure but had no features. It was like a grey silhouette and appeared to be running, like a sprinter in a race. He took a photo with his digital camera, what I captured was surprising and disappointing at the same time. Instead of capturing a figure running, he captured a large greyish orb, very different to the normal dusty orbs normally found at this site. It was interesting that the colour of the orb was the same as the figure he saw and it does appear to have a slight tail that shows movement in the direction that the figure was running. Earlier that night one of the other investigators saw the same apparition run past her heading towards the old section. The apparition was given the nick-name "The running man".

This photograph was pure luck, taken at the right time without trying. This photo was taken on a PFI investigation at a cemetery in December 2006. Jeff was in the new section of the cemetery with another investigator who saw a oval shaped anomaly with the naked eye, traveling through the air in a arched formation before disappearing into the ground. At the exact same moment, Jeff took a photo in the same direction and by pure luck captured the anomaly heading towards the ground. To be honest, we have no idea what this anomaly is but what is important is that Jeff captured something seen by another investigator with the naked eye. Later that night Jeff saw a very similar anomaly with the naked eye doing the same man oeuvres. It was very bright, whitish in colour and appeared to have its own energy source, same brightness as if looking at a star in the sky, but this anomaly appeared to come out of the ground in a arch formation traveling around 15-20 metres, before disappearing into the ground again.
The first photo is the original photo taken the second photo is a cropped to give a close up view of the anomaly.
Camera used was a 4.0 mega-pixel KODAK Z700 digital camera. The weather conditions on the night was very hot between 37-39 degrees Celsius. Photo taken by Jeff Fausch.

This photo has been the subject of much debate. Is it paranormal or the pareidolla effect (seeing faces or figures in random objects such as dirty windows, moss, salt damp etc). This photo was taken at the Gladstone Gaol during a PFI investigation in 2006.
Can you see an image in the lower part of the window? We would like your feed back on this one. I have shown this photo to dozens of people, about 50% can see the same image as I can, the other 50% see nothing at all. This photo is a bit different to normal pareidolla images because on average nearly everyone would seen an image but in this case only 50% see an image but it is always the same image.

These two photos were taken on a PFI investigation 30kms out of Murray Bridge on a large rural property. This investigation was actually to do with UFO activity reported in the area. Jeff took a number of photos near the main driveway and caught these two very strange reddish anomalies.
The first photo was taken near the driveway, a very large reddish anomaly. Approximately 30 seconds later, Jeff took a photo of his car and again caught a similar looking anomaly over the bonnet of the car. He has never photographed anything like it before or since. We don't know what it is but found it very strange to photograph it twice within 30 seconds and it is interesting to note Jeff took two photos before capturing the anomaly over his car. Jeff has never been able to replicate the anomaly. So at this stage it will stay as a unexplained anomaly.

NATURAL PHOTOS THAT APPEAR PARANORMAL
Many photos taken can appear to be of a paranormal nature but in reality most photos will have a reasonable explanation. I have put together a variety of photographs that could be mistaken for the paranormal. I hope this will help in identifying photos that at first appear paranormal, but have a natural explanation.
Dust Orbs photographed at the Adelaide Gaol, Jeff rubbed his hands against the railings then took this photograph. Note how dusty the railings are - in the dark this would not be observed.
More dust orbs that Jeff photographed at the Adelaide Gaol. This time, Jeff rubbed his hand along the rail and clapped his hands, then took this photo. He captured an orb with the pattern affect and managed to get the camera flash on the end window.
Orb photograph taken at a cemetery 80km north of Adelaide. For many people this is an good example of an orb, it gives the impression of being three dimensional, interesting texture and a unusual reddish colour. But again it is all very natural. Jeff dug his foot into the ground then kicked some dirt into the air. If you look at the geology (soil) it is reddish/orange in colour, virtually the same colour of the orb. It is very common for the orbs to be a similar colour the geology of the area. Also, there is a lot of quartz in the soil that gives a three dimensional reflective effect. Something to keep in mind.
Again the same cemetery 80 north of Adelaide, this time a gust of wind blew up as took the photo, giving the effect of multiple coloured orbs. Its important to be aware of your environment, note the weather conditions, wind etc.
Another cemetery photo - what appears to be a glowing orb is actually a torch being shone at Jeff's camera as he took the photo.
This a perfect example of why you should never take photos in bad weather. This photo was taken on a winters night - it was raining and the temperature was around 8 degrees Celsius. The rain droplets are reflected by the flash of the camera and human breath can be seen on the left side of the photo.
Condensation on the camera lens on a extremely cold night. Looks spooky but a quick wipe of the lens will fix the problem. Again, I must say, weather condition like this is not a good time to conduct an investigation.
This a is common mistake, photographing the moon. I always take test shots of the moon or any astronomical bodies that may be visible in the night sky. It is very easy to photograph the moon or a bright star without knowing it at the time. The rectangle shaped light is a reflective sign in the cemetery.
This is an interesting photograph, It was taken at the Adelaide Gaol in the Sally Port. A storm had just passed though, very heavy rain and high winds. Jeff took this photo a minute or so after the rain had stopped and behold, he caught a lots of orbs, different sizes, colours and textures. How could the orbs could be dust if it had been raining and everything was damp? The answer is within the location. It may have been raining very heavily and it is very obvious that water has drained into the Sally Port, making the floor damp, but what cannot be seen in the photograph is how windy it was when the photo was taken. It was blowing straight through the Sally Port, hitting the locked doorway, causing a whirlwind effect and blowing up the dust of the wall - an area that had not been effected by the rain. Thus, we have multiple orbs in the Sally Port where the wind was circulating.
This is a photograph that looks very impressive, and may we say, this is not a dusty orb. But it still has a very natural explanation. It is human hair in front of the camera lens. When hair is blown in front of the camera lens the flash will illuminate the individual hair follicles to give the illusion of long tentacle-like anomalies. This type of photograph on the net is sometimes called "super orbs". So our advise is if you have long hair, tie it back or put it under some type of hat during an investigation.
This photo was taken at a cemetery outside Adelaide, The investigator saw illuminated yellow lights moving around in a large gum tree in the cemetery. No it wasn't dusty orbs, but a pair of possums watching from the tree. When you flash your torch around it will pick up the reflective eyes of the local wildlife. This was a test photo taken before the investigation commenced, so was used as a reference of the wildlife in the area.
This was a test photo I took of soap bubbles during day time hours. Notice that the bubbles leave a background shadow. I also rubbed my feet on the carpet and managed create the dusty orb effect in the background. There is a bit of a trick of the eye as the dusty orbs appear to be in the background but in reality they are very close to the lens and the bubbles are roughly 40-60cms from the camera lens.
